E900–E999: glazing agents, gases & sweeteners
Unlike the tidier lower ranges, the E900s group several unrelated jobs. Glazing agents such as E901 (beeswax) and E903 (carnauba wax) give a shiny coating; packaging gases such as E948 (oxygen) and E938 (argon) protect food in the pack; and intense sweeteners such as E950 (acesulfame K), E951 (aspartame), E955 (sucralose) and E960 (steviol glycosides) provide sweetness in place of sugar.
The authorised uses of every additive in this range are listed in the EU food additives database, with safety evaluations carried out by EFSA. ProductGuru summarises this for reference only.
