Can a barcode tell you if a product is genuine?
A scannable, valid barcode only proves the number is well-formed — not that the item in your hand is real. Counterfeiters routinely copy genuine barcodes onto fake goods, so a matching code is not proof of authenticity.
What actually helps:
- Check that the registered brand owner behind the barcode matches the product — look it up on our barcode lookup or in the official GS1 company registry.
- Buy from the brand or an authorized retailer.
- Look for product-specific security features (holograms, serial numbers, verification apps from the brand).
- Check whether the product appears in any official safety recall.
FAQ
Can two different products have the same barcode?
Legitimately each product should have a unique barcode, but counterfeiters often copy real codes onto fakes, so a matching barcode is not proof that a product is genuine.
How do I find out who owns a barcode?
The registered brand owner is recorded in the GS1 company database. ProductGuru also shows the brand and manufacturer on record for many codes — enter the number on our barcode lookup.
