How quickly does a recall notice actually become public?

Original analysis · updated 26 October 2026

A recall notice is only useful once you can actually read it. Measuring the gap between the date an authority puts on a notice and the moment it is retrievable from that authority’s public feed: France’s RappelConso takes about 1 day, while US FDA food notices take about 47 days. We poll both of those feeds at least daily, so that gap is theirs, not ours.

Why some rows are greyed out

Our own polling interval is inside every figure here. If we check a feed weekly, we cannot tell a register that published instantly from one that took five days — so those rows are marked inconclusive and are not ranked. Only registers where the observed delay is clearly longer than our own checking interval are treated as measurable. We would rather publish the uncertainty than a tidy league table.

Method

For every notice dated within the last 120 days, the gap between the date the authority put on it and the moment we first retrieved it from that authority's public feed. Only recent notices are used: measuring our whole archive would report how long ago we backfilled a register, not how fast it publishes. Our own polling interval is inside every figure and is stated per register; where that interval could account for the whole observation we mark the register as inconclusive rather than rank it.
