Reported risk: Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has revealed that the charms on the recalled piece of jewellery contain lead in excess of the allowable limit. Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act , it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 600 mg/kg total lead. Lead is very toxic to children, even at low exposure levels. Children can ingest lead when they chew, suck, or swallow jewellery items containing lead which can cause damage to their bodies. Potential health effects associated with exposure to high levels of lead include vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma or even death. In laboratory testing, the metal charms on the clips were found to be composed of 74% total lead which is far in excess of the legal limits. Neither Health Canada nor Donovan Distributors Ltd. has received any reports of incidents or illnesses related to the use of this product.
